Relying On the Lord

“Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who

 greatly delights in His 

commandments!... Light dawns in the darkness of the upright; he is gracious, merciful and righteous… he is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord; his heart is steady, he will not be afraid.” ~ Psalm 112:1,4,7-8a

As we continue this journey that the Lord is leading us on called church planting, one theme that

continues to be shared with us is, “You know church planting is not for the faint of heart. Can YOU handle it?” My answer is always the same. “Well…actually…no.”

Ministry itself is not for the faint of heart. Let me remind you that being a Christian is not for the faint of heart! None of us can handle the pressures of the world, the flesh and the devil on our own. None of us can withstand the depression that comes with feeling like a failure at times, or the low self-esteem that is around the corner when our human plans are, well, not going as planned.

The Psalmist reminds us that to whatever and wherever the Lord has called us, we are to praise Him and be obedient to Him. It is in that which we receive His grace, mercy and righteousness. It is by trusting in Christ that our heart stands firm, is steady and we lose the fear that is before us.

Oswald Chambers reminds us in My Utmost for His Highest (June 3^rd): “Whenever there is doubt, stop at once. Never reason it out and say – ‘I wonder why I shouldn’t?’ God instructs us in what we choose, that is He guides our common sense, and we no longer hinder His Spirit by continually saying, ‘Now Lord, what is Thy will?’”

So can I handle it? No, I can’t. I will be the first to admit. However, I know the One who can. Lisa and I know that the Lord’s will for our life at this time is to plant a church. We also know now…and here is what many of you have been waiting for us to tell you… that the place He wants us to plant is Myrtle Beach, SC. We also know the area He wants us to plant the church is in the Carolina Forest community. You can learn more about this plant in what follows.

You may say, “Wow!! Myrtle Beach, I would love to live there! – the sand, the sun, the ocean.” I have to admit that Myrtle Beach is a wonderful place to vacation. However, what we are truly entering is a spiritually dark place. As you will see in our handout there is a lot of brokenness there – gambling addictions, drug and alcohol addictions, teen pregnancies is through the roof (higher than state average and a lot of repeat births), broken families and a non-commit to religion of any  kind. That is part of the reason why no one has wanted to take on this challenge for seventeen years. Yes, the sand, sun and ocean will be nice; but the reason we go is out of obedience to the Lord’s call and the lost souls who are broken that need to hear about the grace and love of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Let me ask you to partner with us in two important ways. First, and most crucial, is pray with us. Pray

fervently that God will go before us into this vast mission field. We need Him to “guide our common sense.” Second, pray about partnering with us financially. We begin with twelve percent of our goal. Ask the Lord if His desire for you is to give above the tithe to your church a three year committed support offering to reaching the lost in Carolina Forest. Even a one-time gift will go a long way in helping us get started toward moving on the field. Another opportunity may be for your church, Sunday School class, or small group/Bible study group to support us financially.

Finally, I want to close by telling you how much we appreciate you. We would not be where we are if it wasn’t for God placing you in our lives. Our friends and family have been very supportive in standing with us as we sought Him in this next step of our ministry. We love you and we pray for you.

God is Blessing

Yesterday (5/1/16) we were able to go back to Norris Hill, PCA in Anderson, SC to hear an old friend speak. In the middle of the family is Dr. Clarke MacIntosh. He is a medical doctor and missionary to the Sudan region in Africa. For the past seven years he has worked with the tribes in the area that have minor needs to major medical needs all-the-while sharing the gospel. He is a great guy and a very dear brother in Christ to us.

In his message yesterday he gave a quote that really hit home to us as we venture into church planting. In our family devotions Sunday night we discussed at length much of what Clarke said and particularly this by Denny Dyvigi, "We go into missions thinking we are doing God a favor, and in reality, He is calling us to go so that He can bless us."

This was a heart check for me; not because I desire God's blessings on this earth; but in reflection, I asked myself, "Am I doing what I am doing because I want to do God a favor?" This is a positive way of asking myself if I really think so highly of myself that God needs me for this work. Of course, the answer is no. One thing I've learned in my fifteen years of ministry is that God doesn't need me for anything. Our Sovereign LORD is perfectly capable of doing His will without me. And, when I often think too highly of myself, He has a way of letting me know.

The whole impetus for our family to church plant, and for me personally, is Joshua 24:24...obedience to His voice...serving Him. God has given us a place to go and we are excited about it. We can't wait to share with you where that place is. However, right now is the phase of meeting with Sessions and MNA Committees, making plans and getting materials together, and raising support. All of this preliminary work is vital to ensure a good start to the new church.

Finally, let me mention what has happened over the last two weeks since our last newsletter. I went to the Pee Dee Presbytery meeting to talk with some individuals about the church plant and introduce myself to others with whom I only have talked on the telephone. It was a very fruitful time being with these fathers and brothers in the faith. There was much encouragement and for that I am thankful. Also, I had a great meeting with the acting MNA Coordinator afterwards at Starbucks. We spent time together getting to know one another and sharing testimonies. This past weekend we went to Atlanta for our annual Teach Them Diligently home school convention. We heard Ken Ham, Steve Green and Stephen Kendrick speak on various topics. Tanner and Jonathan were interviewed by Todd Friel of Wretched Radio. I'll let you know when that episode airs.

So, we have had an eventful couple of weeks. To quote Mr. Beaver in Chronicles of Narnia, "They say Aslan is on the move - perhaps he has already landed." Amen to that!! God is on the move with this church plant. We are ready to follow when He gives us the signal.

What a whirlwind of a month we have had as a family. God has truly been good to us in our seeking Him and His will in our life as a family. The prayer continued to be, “is church planting where God wants us?” And we kept getting confirmation after confirmation. So we set our sights toward what was ahead following what Paul told the Philippians,  Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, have this attitude; and if in anything you have a different attitude, God will reveal that also to you. (Philippians 3:14)

So, I attended a conference for church planters and churches that desire to plant. This was a week of refreshment and reflection. The Lord really used this week for me personally. I was able to hear God’s word preached powerfully and effectively. I also heard some really good lectures, one being on church discipline that I think has been the best I’ve ever heard on that topic. The weather was beautiful. I also got to meet some new friends, which was really neat.

I bookended this trip with a spending some time with my family and some other friends who were camping together on our spring break. It was a great week for all as we needed it after moving to a new home. We were blessed with spending some invaluable time with friends who have been great prayer warriors and friends for many years.

Then came MNA assessment for Lisa and I both in Atlanta (Hot-lanta!!). We had filled out surveys. We had some of you fill out surveys. We were surveyed more when we arrived. For us this was the last confirmation before a Presbytery (somewhere). We didn’t know what to expect. There was apprehension. There was a sense of nervousness. What would these peers and church fathers think about us? Were we “church planting people” according to them?

Enthusiastically I can say that we met the assessment’s requirements. In fact, we were given the score of going  ahead and moving to a field if there is one we feel called. This was a sense of relief to some extent; although we didn’t feel defined, or did we place our identity into whether we would be “church planter people.” We knew God has an awesome plan for us even if we were told that church planting didn’t suit us.

Yet we passed. Another confirmation for us to “go.” So where do we go? And what will we do when we get there? The answer to the second question is much easier than the first. We find a place to live and begin to build relationships. That is the starting point. We will build relationships and tell others about our wonderful, loving Savior! The answer to the first is not yet completely revealed. We have a sense of where we like and fit best.  However, the final determining factor is Presbytery of that area. There are still talking, planning and most likely fund-raising.  So as always, we ask now primarily for prayers;  prayers for the place, the plan and the pledges.  

Finally, since assessment is over. I will continue to send out newsletters. However,  I am going to update my blog more often. I am thinking one time every 1-2 weeks. So if you want information on us quicker, refer to it periodically.

This letter is about a week later than I have been sending, but we have so much to share of God’s goodness with you that I wanted to be sure I was accurate in the most recent acts of His providence. First, I must tell you that through your generous giving we have fully met the goal (and more) for our training and assessment. Second, I need to tell you that we completed our church planting training a few weeks ago. Lisa and I received a lot of wonderful information and much to ponder and pray about as we begin to set the vision and mission that we have discussed for over 15 years to paper for a new church. The speakers at the conference included Ted Powers, Tim Rice, Parakaleo Ministry team for the CP wives, among others. Thank you for your prayers for safe travels and open hearts for God to speak to us while we were gone. Finally, we want to tell you that several prayers were answered just in the last few weeks. One major one was that our house sold. We haven’t signed the dotted line yet, but everything from inspections to appraisals has gone good. The closing date is supposed to be in the next few days, which some of you may not have gotten this letter until after the deal is done. Due to this we have to move quickly. Since the offer/acceptance was made on the house, we looked diligently for a place to rent while we are in transition. I never thought this task would be so hard. To say that decent rental property in Abbeville is not available is an understatement. However, God was steadfast in answering prayer at just the right time and in a testimony of His most sovereign way. We were able to obtain a rental property that more than meets our need. It will be a great “headquarters” as we pray for the Lord’s leading to the specific location of His church plant and begin raising the funds needed for the new work. I know a lot of you ask: Where are you going? When will you actually start? Those are great questions that we don’t know the answer to yet. All we know is that we are to do assessment next which will be in April. Also, we know that when God is ready to reveal  the time and place it will be in His perfect sovereignty. Our ministry verse continues to be Hebrews 11:8. However, this month we are focusing on 2 Timothy 2:1-2, As for you, my son, be strong through the grace that is ours in union with Christ Jesus. Take the teachings that you heard me proclaim in the presence of many witnesses, and entrust them to reliable people, who will be able to teach others also. Our prayer is that wherever the Lord sends us, we will be a witness and be able to teach others, who will be able to teach others, who will be able to teach others, on and on. Thank you for your love and prayers as we look forward to the mission of our Lord!

Worship, Waiting & Work!

One thing I have learned in my lifetime is that God works in such mysterious ways. Where one minute life seems to be pretty good, and then the next trials and hardships seem to be upon us. Where there was a bright sunny outlook turns into the darkest clouds of our life; a time, maybe, that our biggest fear has come true and stares us right in the face.  In these hardships and trials God prepares us to go farther in our walk with Him. The course that He has set for us is total reliance upon Him and not on ourselves; where we are established upon the foundation of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The difficulty for us is that our plans are often out of accord with His plans and He moves us, sometimes pushes us, back into the will He so desires. Sometimes the mission of ministry changes and God asks us to do something different for Him that may be out of our comfort zone. Yet Proverbs 16:3 says, commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established. That is our goal as we embark on this new adventure in our family’s life. We are committing our way unto Him. We are fully relying on the grace and goodness of our Lord to establish in us what He has planned. We have seen many changes in our ministry this past year, some very unexpected changes. However, we have had the opportunity during this time of waiting to reflect on what God is doing in our life. Our waiting has allowed us to rest in Him and seek Him. Our waiting has been a means of preparation for the new work, the new calling that is before us. There is excitement in our hearts. There is a freshness to the work to come. The worship of Him has grown. Although we are not sure where the new work is to be done, at this point in time we know what it is. We have adopted for our family verse for 2016 Hebrews 11:8, By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place he was to receive as an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going (emphasis mine). Continue to pray with us as we worship, wait and work. Thank You for the love and support you already give.
